I’m Sam, and my journey has been a winding one!
I spent the bulk of my twenties exploring my passions and creating several small businesses. I ran my own fine jewelry company called “Halcyon” (featured in several issues of Tatler Magazine), self-published and illustrated two poetry books (one in my own handwriting), sold rare and unique mineral specimens, completed my 500-Hour Yoga Teacher Certification with a personal focus in mindful meditation, and discovered a passion for photography and contemporary art. (And had two kiddos!) My tendency to switch paths was rooted in an insatiable desire to learn, expand, and experience the endless possibilities of life. To chase the dream, achieve it, and then ask, “what’s next?”.
There were certainly some insecurities and emotional shadows at play at times, driving me to try my hand at things that weren’t a great match for my personality. But on a deeper level, my motivation has been to follow inspiration, wherever it may lead. That euphoric feeling when inspiration strikes fuels me more than the end result, and always has. This makes me a terrible businesswoman, which was a tedious lesson to learn! (Working on this, ha!) But as I near my thirties, I see another possibility ahead—fiction writing.
I’ve been an avid reader and fan of fantasy since childhood, when I first picked up books like “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe”, “The Hobbit”, “A Series of Unfortunate Events”, and “Redwall” in elementary school. I dreamt of writing novels and taking book tours, imagining the thrill my favorite authors must have felt to hold their books in hand. But as I grew, so did my interests—and my emotional baggage, which has taken a ton of work to unload. So, my endless curiosities kept me busy.
2023 finds me with a nearly empty plate and the intuition that now is the time. I run a mineral and crystal shop with my partner and am preparing for an upcoming exhibition (fall 2023), but I do have free time to work with. And so I write now when inspiration strikes, building a world of my own as I stitch together visions of my characters’ adventurers. Who knows what the future may bring, but I intend to follow inspiration when it calls, bouncing between writing and my artsy hobbies until I hold my own novel in hand.
As has been my habit over the years, I’m happy to share the journey each step of the way. This blog is young, but has become a sacred and safe space for me to connect with like-minded souls. I love keeping up with your journeys, and sharing vignettes of my own. Thank you for your support, love, and encouragements. It’s sincerely felt and appreciated.
Forward, onward! Wherever inspiration may lead.

February 20, 2023 at 7:05 pmHey Samantha, nice to find you on here. Thanks for liking my blog. 🙂 I also love C.S. Lewis and Tolkien and relate to this post about creating your own world through fiction. I would love to see one of your self illustrated poetry books… Are they still available? I just finished an MFA program and my own first book and have put it aside for the time being, but would like to potentially self publish it. Did you self publish yours?

February 20, 2023 at 7:36 pmHi there! I love that we have the same taste in fiction and appreciate your kind words! And congratulations on finishing your MFA! I did self publish both poetry books via Amazon KDP, but have recently pulled them from Amazon. I’ve debated re-listing them; the handwritten one in particular was incredibly personal, and basically my poetic therapy journal while processing trauma, spirituality, insecurities, etc., haha. I share a few clips of them here in this video if you’d like to see what they look like:
https://youtu.be/rwyYp3XUg1U I would re-list them if I knew there were interest, but otherwise for the time being, I’m feeling a touch vulnerable and okay with keeping them on the back burner. Thank you so much for asking, I’m appreciative! If you do decide to self publish your book (which congrats for finishing that too!!), I’m available to answer any questions you may have. (It’s been a few years, but I’ll do my best!)
